Designing a Wand

When considering a wand for your character, first think of the things they are best at, and the things they most enjoy. A wand should complement an already present ability, and there are both woods and cores for many different purposes.
On the Character Application Form, we ask three things about a wand, and the answers can be found below:

Wand core: from the list in the second post below
Wand length: between 8¾" and 16"
Blah blah blah, write a better intro when you're done fixing god and everything else.

- Alder: A wood for those with tastes toward the lengthy and complex. If you find yourself drinking coffee so you can stay up to finish casting, this is the wood for you.
- Apple: The wood of choice for matchmakers and movie stars, Apple lends itself to works of beauty, love, and generous intent.
- Ash: Connection, wisdom, surrender
- Aspen: A wonderful selection for those who want to change the world, Aspen favours the forward-thinking and devoted. An excellent choice for a fanatic of any variety.
- Birch: The wood for renewal and fresh beginnings. An excellent choice for a second wand if one has changed allegiences.
- Blackthorn: This wood favours the judicious and prudent, lending itself to be a preferred wand for those in positions requiring balance, sense, and fair judgement.
- Ebony: The wood of scientists and scholars, Ebony yearns for new things, leading the owner to grand experimentation and deep study in the fields that suit him best.

- Fir: Clarity, Achievement, Energy
- Hawthorn: A brilliant choice for spies, actors, and interrogators, Hawthorn balances benefit and consequence, encompassing the essence of contradiction and paradox. It is a wood for those who believe in everything and nothing.
- Hazel: Creativity, Purity, Honesty
- Holly: The wood of choice for Interrogators and those in Magical Law Enforcement, Holly projects action, assertion, and objectivity.
- Ironwood: The hardest of hardwoods, Ironwood is renowned for its healing qualities, which have earned it the Latin title 'lignum vitae' -- the wood of life. The wood is an excellent choice for medi-wizards of all kinds, encouraging, as it does, healing and soothing.
- Ivy: A wonderful wood for the patient and stubborn, Ivy bends easily around changes in the path and obstacles to success, and encourages its owners to do the same.
- Oak: A popular wood in Pureblood lines, when a definitive specialty does not manifest, Oak projects an air of class, stability, and tradition, and a stoic adherence to them.
- Reed: A flexible and lightweight wood, Reed works best in healing and teaching applications, with a tendency to favour those who work with young children.
- Rowan: A fantastic wood for defensive spellcasting and emotional spellwork, like the Patronus or Cheering Charm.
- Teak: An excellent wood for those who put themselves and their own comforts first, Teak tends to favour vain owners.
- Vine: Introspection, Relaxation, Depth
- Willow: An excellent wood for Divination, Willow clears the way for the subtleties of time and interaction to make an appearance.
- Yew: The wood of choice for those in Transmutation and Illusion, Yew has an excellent gift for altering the substance of things, if not their nature.
Wand Cores

- Ashwinder Ash: An excellent core for subtle works, including traps and concealments.
- Augurey Feather: The augurey is of particular interest to those in Divination, and the feathers seem to do justice to that interest, as cores.
- Dragon Heartstring: Particularly good for hexes, but an excellent choice for charms work, in general.
- Dryad Hair: Tends to lend itself to uses in Transfiguration.
- Essence of Silver Thistle:
- Essence of Wood Rose: A good choice for those in tune with nature and creation, making it a fine core for those in Herbology and Potions.
- Gryphon Feather: The first choice in cores for those who enjoy flashy magics, and believe that everything's better with sparkle and shine.
- Jobberknoll Feather: A fine choice for bards, scholars, and translators, the jobberknoll's feathers are known to aid in works of memory.
- Phoenix Ash: Renowned for usefulness in magics requiring stability or repetition.
- Phoenix Feather: A brilliant choice for defensive magics and shielding charms.
- Pixie Hair: A core for the lighthearted, excellent in cheering charms, levitation, and Patronus summons.
- Unicorn Mane or Tail: Said to be best for the pure of heart, Unicorn Hair lends itself to uses in healing magics.
